 Hi, my name is Laura Johnson. I live in Wayland Massachusetts with my husband Alan and our 9 year old son. I am very fortunate to say I have a life most people only dream about but I assure you it wasn’t always how I have felt. You see, I was a single mom, working 50 hours a week just to make ends meet. I was always racing home to pick up my son from daycare, always worrying when I hit traffic, always feeling terrible when he was the last child to be picked up after a long day. I was tortured day in and day out by the fact that my son was being brought up by other people. They were wonderful caregivers but they were seeing my son’s “firsts” in life and I was hearing about them. |
I kept promising myself everything would get better and I kept searching for different working from home opportunities that may allow me the privilege of taking care of my own son. I tried Herbalife and it was just horrible for me. I bought the BIG package and then my up line disappeared….no one to call for help, no one for support or direction. It was terrible and I was quick to throw in the towel. Years tumbled on as years often do, and my son was in grade school, and then came the after school programs and camps and again, I was watching my son grow up and missing out on so very, very much. It really broke my heart.
I was angry. I was angry for having to work so hard and miss so much. It didn’t make sense. I started reading and listening. I started following the advice of some fantastic motivational speakers and two words resonated with me: “No Excuses”! For a long time I made too many excuses for not attaining my dreams in this world and after recognizing that deep-seated behavior I found my determination. It was the kind of determination where you will do whatever it takes to make things work. It is an amazing feeling and a very good backing when everything doesn’t go perfect the first time around.
Now, for the good news: I refused to give up and settle for mediocrity. I kept researching home businesses. When I found one I liked, I hopped on the phone calls and listened…I grilled my up line. I have to admit, I was the type of person I would dread on the other line. I asked about their experience, how much money they made, what kind of training they had, how well their group performed, and what kind of support they offered? I drove these poor people crazy but I assured them it was only with the best of intentions! I was determined to be successful and available for to my son.
And then WOW - it happened! I actually found the absolute best on line business I could have hoped for! We have incredible wealth management and real life matters products! But just as importantly, I found the teacher and the team that I had seriously dreamed of! I can’t tell you how amazing the people are that I work with every day. They selflessly have taken their time to be certain that each team member, up line, down line, side line, is up to speed on how to work their business. Even if I owned my own large company I would not be able to afford the team of experts that we have access to on a regular basis. Marketing trends change and you need to stay current. What worked last year doesn’t necessarily work this year and even season to season can change effective marketing campaigns. Let me share with you some of the basic steps that helped me start my business.
The first hurdle was that of actually setting up my online business rather than using the canned repetitive product site. We have a proprietary marketing system that walked me through from A - Z in setting up my own personalized, branded on line business. The website pages, the auto responder, the letters for the auto responders, what settings to use and where to use them (This makes a BIG difference.), and the setting up of merchant accounts so you can properly and easily accept payments for products.
The next step was setting up advertising campaigns, where to advertise, how to advertise, graphics for advertising, how much should I spend? What kind of results should I expect at what point? I was taught how to track my advertising to see if it was working or not so I knew when to invest or when to pull back. I learned about the importance of social networking and how to rank in search engines. I learned that there are really good people out there with integrity. I also learned that sometimes, especially at the beginning, it is important to remember your dreams to bolster you through the questions of ‘Why am I doing this?”. The energy you put into your business is much like coal in a locomotive, you need a lot of energy to start your business moving, but then you create momentum and then BOY – watch out, you are on your way!
The absolute best part about all of this hard work is that whenever I had an issue and I needed to trouble shoot that issue, I had several incredible volunteers raising their hand telling me their availability. I had already paid my money…so why would these people help me? Why would they give up their time …and sometimes lots of it, to help me? The answer is twofold:
1) My direct up line has monetary incentives through the compensation plan when I am successful.
2) Besides being compensated, we have a real team. Some people excel in one area while others of us excel in other areas. We build on each others strengths and assist with each others weaknesses.
For instance, one person had spent tens of thousands of dollars on Google…..tens of thousands! I assure you I called her when it came time for me to try my hand with that advertising to ensure that I did not spend tens of thousands of dollars. We learn from each others mistakes and we share in each others triumphs. I will tell you, not all teams are like this at all. I hear lots of complaints about other people’s up, side, down lines and I think, Wow, how lucky am I to have found such a fantastic, well put together team of business coaches that really pull each other up.
